Ethical Treatment of Transgender Youth & Their Families
Today’s youth are breaking the rules of gender as never before, and they need the support of their families, communities, and providers. Unfortunately, many providers lack confidence in their own knowledge and ability to work with these kids and their families. (If you’re working with kids of any age in WNC, you are likely already interacting with trans children and adolescents or their families. If that doesn’t ring true for you, your clients may not have come out to you yet.)
This training seeks to introduce youth-serving professionals to the basics of gender as it applies to transgender/non-binary/gender non-conforming youth, as well as provide tools and resources (local to Asheville and beyond) for supporting families through their child’s gender transition.
Who: Youth-serving professionals (counselors, therapists, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrist, qualified professionals)
When: April 21, 11AM-1PM (Bring your lunch!)
Where: 44 Merrimon Avenue, Suite 1 - Group Room
Cost: $40 (Certificate of attendance for 2 contact hours provided.)
About the trainers: Heather Branham, LCSW (she/her/hers) has been studying gender and sexuality for almost 20 years. In her counseling practice, she specializes in helping individuals, couples, and families build resilience while navigating the complexities of gender transition. Before starting Porch Light Counseling, Heather’s clinical practice focused on perinatal mental health and early intervention with children (birth to 5) who had experienced trauma. She has also served families as a birth doula, a nanny, and a prenatal/postpartum yoga teacher.
Stephen Wiseman, LCSW (they/them/theirs) is a trans, Appalachian queer social worker committed to undoing oppression in all its forms through advocacy, direct action, education, and good old-fashioned conversation. Stephen's advocacy work has included positions at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and Equality North Carolina. Stephen has also served NC families as an intensive in-home team lead in the Triangle-area and Asheville.
Heather and Stephen are frequent presenters on topics relevant to the trans community and consult with professionals and organizations seeking to improve their services to this community.
